When sourcing military-grade electronic components, the certifications a distributor holds can make the difference between a compliant supply chain and a program-ending counterfeit incident. But a certificate on a wall is not enough. I have seen too many cases where a distributor’s paperwork looked current, but a five-minute verification call revealed an expired or even suspended certification. This article covers the key certifications that matter, how to verify them, and how to build those checks into your supplier qualification process so you are not relying on trust alone.

Key Certifications for Military Electronics Distributors

The most meaningful certifications fall into a few categories. AS9120, the aerospace and defense supplement to ISO 9001, is the baseline quality management standard for distributors who handle military and aviation parts. For companies that test or modify components in-house, AS9100 applies instead. AS6081 extends those requirements with specific counterfeit-part prevention controls, including supply chain traceability, inspection, and documentation protocols that go beyond a generic quality manual.

On the component qualification side, QML certification to MIL-PRF-38535 tells you the distributor can supply microcircuits built on a DLA-qualified manufacturing line. QML is not a distributor certification in the strict sense, but a reputable military electronics distributor must be able to source, stock, and ship QML-class parts with full traceability to the qualified manufacturer. A PDF of a certificate is not verification. I routinely check the certification body’s online database directly. For AS certifications, the OASIS database maintained by the IAQG lets you confirm the certificate number, scope, and expiration date in under a minute. ITAR registration can be confirmed through the DDTC’s electronic licensing system, and the distributor’s ITAR statement should always be accompanied by a valid DDTC registration number.

In one audit a few years ago, a broker presented an AS9120 certificate that looked genuine on screen. The OASIS check showed the certificate had been suspended six months earlier for major nonconformities. The broker’s excuse was an “administrative oversight,” but in defense procurement, that oversight would have been a stop-ship from our customer. I now require all new distributors to provide current certificate copies within 48 hours of the initial quote, and I verify every one myself before the first order.

A strong incoming inspection program should include visual and dimensional checks, electrical testing for at-risk part types, and a documented process for handling non-conforming product. AS6081 provides a detailed framework for this, but I have seen distributors who claim AS6081 compliance while running little more than a visual once-over. Ask for a copy of their inspection checklist and compare it against the AS6081 clause 6 requirements. If it is a one-page template, it is probably insufficient.

Traceability is not just a certificate of conformance. I want to see the original OEM packing slip, the date-code tracking, and the storage conditions at every handling point. Treat certification verification as a gated step in your supplier qualification process. During the initial audit, I match the certification claims to the actual procedures on the floor. If the QMS manual says parts are stored in humidity-controlled cabinets, I want to see the monitoring logs, not just the cabinets. When Additional Certifications Become Necessary

Most programs do not require a distributor to hold every possible certification. A distributor need not be ISO 17025 accredited if they are not performing calibration, and DMEA trusted access accreditation applies only if the program demands it. However, if your contract flows down requirements for trusted foundry access, radiation-hardened lot processing, or specific QML class levels (Class K for space, Class V for missile systems), confirm that the distributor can provide evidence of compliant sourcing from those qualified lines, even if the distributor itself does not hold the accreditation.

For example, a space-grade program might ask for QML Class V microcircuits and a radiation-hardness assurance report. The distributor must be able to supply the part with the manufacturer’s QML documentation and verify that the part was processed through the Class V flow, not just pulled from commercial stock.
